人類及動物體骨組織不斷地進行著重建,骨重建過程包括骨的分解吸收與新骨的形成。破骨細胞(Osteoclast,OC)負責骨分解與吸收,而成骨細胞(osteoblast,OB)負責新骨形成。破骨細胞貼附在舊骨區域,分泌酸性物質溶解礦物質,分泌蛋白酶消化骨基質,形成骨吸收陷窩;其后,成骨細胞移行至被吸收部位,分泌骨基質,骨基質礦化而形成新骨。破骨與成骨過程的平衡是維持正常骨量的關鍵。
抗酒石酸酸性磷酸酶(TRAP,tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase)為破骨細胞的標志酶,特異地分布于破骨細胞中,為破骨細胞所特有。通常作為鑒別破骨細胞的重要標志物,使破骨細胞呈紅色。
